What to do in the first ten minutes
- Pick the tooth up by the crown, the white chewing part. Don't touch the root.
- If it's dirty, rinse it for a few seconds in milk or saline. No scrubbing, no soap, no wrapping it in tissue.
- Try to put it back in the socket, facing the right way, and hold it in place by gently biting on a clean cloth. This is the single most useful thing you can do.
- If it won't go back in, keep it wet. A small cup of milk is ideal. Saliva works: hold it inside your cheek if you're an adult and can do it safely. Never plain water; it damages the root cells.
- Call (770) 802-2220 and come in. Every minute the root is dry lowers the odds.
Baby teeth are the exception: don't replant a knocked-out baby tooth, because it can damage the adult tooth underneath. Still call, so the area can be checked.
When to go to the ER instead
If the injury came with a possible broken jaw, a loss of consciousness, a deep cut that needs stitches, or bleeding that won't slow with pressure, go to an emergency room first. Wellstar Douglas Hospital in Douglasville and Wellstar Cobb Hospital in Austell are the closest for most of our area. Keep the tooth in milk, and call us from there so we can see you as soon as you're cleared.
What happens at your visit
Our dentist examines the socket and the neighboring teeth, and the $89 X-rays check for root fractures or bone damage you can't see. If the tooth can be replanted, it's cleaned, seated, and splinted to the teeth beside it for a couple of weeks while the ligament reattaches. A replanted tooth usually needs a root canal in the following weeks; you'll get that plan and its price in writing.
The same visit covers teeth that were knocked loose or pushed out of position but not out. Those are repositioned and splinted too, and the sooner the better.
If the tooth can't be saved, the socket is treated and you'll hear the replacement options honestly, none of which need deciding that day.

Yes. A loosened or shifted adult tooth should be repositioned and splinted the same day if possible. Have your child avoid biting on it, keep it as still as they can, and call.
Can a replanted tooth last?
Many do, for years, especially when replanted quickly and followed with a root canal on schedule. Some eventually fail and need replacing. Our dentist will be straight with you about the odds for your specific tooth after seeing the X-ray.
