What happens at your same-day visit
The $89 exam and X-rays show the tooth's position, its roots, and how close it sits to the nerve canal in the lower jaw. Our dentist explains what removal involves for your particular tooth and gives you a written price, along with any reason it might be wiser to schedule the extraction rather than do it that moment (active spreading infection, for instance, sometimes gets a day or two of antibiotics first).
The extraction itself is done under full local anesthetic. A fully erupted wisdom tooth comes out like any other tooth. An impacted one is a surgical extraction: a small opening in the gum, sometimes dividing the tooth into sections, then closing the site. Both are done here. Oral sedation, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), or a combination are available for patients who want them; tell the front desk when you call so it can be planned.

How long is recovery?
Most people are back to normal routines in three to five days for a simple extraction and about a week for a surgical one. Swelling peaks around day two or three. Soft foods, no straws, no smoking, and the written aftercare we send home cover the rest.
What is dry socket and how do I avoid it?
Dry socket happens when the blood clot protecting the extraction site is lost, exposing bone; it's painful and shows up a few days after the extraction. Avoid straws, smoking, spitting forcefully and vigorous rinsing for the first few days. If pain gets worse instead of better around day three, call us; it's treatable.
Do all four wisdom teeth have to come out at once?
No. For an emergency, our dentist removes the tooth that's causing the problem. Whether the others should come out, and when, is a separate conversation you can have once the pain is behind you.
